Common Questions about Capacity Assessment

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

A capacity assessment is a formal process used to determine whether an adult can make personal or financial decisions independently. It is commonly required for guardianship, trusteeship, supported decision-making agreements, or co-decision-making arrangements under Alberta's Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act (AGTA).

A capacity assessment can be requested by:

  • Family members or caregivers concerned about a loved one’s decision-making ability

  • Legal representatives or lawyers

  • Physicians, healthcare providers, or social workers

  • The Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT)

  • Individuals going through a court process for guardianship or trusteeship

All assessments are performed by Mukesh Mishra, MSW, RCSW, a licensed Designated Capacity Assessor (DCA) in Alberta. Mukesh is authorized by the Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services to conduct capacity assessments under AGTA.

We provide mobile services across Edmonton and surrounding areas (within 1–2 hours driving distance). Assessments can be conducted at:
