Capacity assessment depends on language. If a grandmother who has spoken Punjabi all her life is assessed in English, or through her son, the report may show her English rather than her understanding. Mukesh Mishra provides assessments directly in:
- English
- Hindi
- Punjabi
- Urdu
- Nepali
If you need a different language, please ask.
Why it matters
- A fairer result. The person can answer in their own words, with their own humour and nuance.
- Less strain on families. Relatives are not put in the position of translating, which can compromise the assessment and family relationships.
- More trust. Older adults often relax with someone who speaks their language.
Understanding family and culture
In many South Asian families, decisions are made together, and elders may expect their children to handle the finances. That is not the same as lacking capacity. Mukesh takes that context into account and looks at whether the person understands the decision, rather than who usually handles it.
Talking to your parent
This can be a difficult subject. It helps to say that a professional will visit to help the family understand how to support them, and to avoid words that sound like a test or a punishment. Mukesh can talk with you first about how to explain it.
